Dogs rely on their owners for their care and for their
health and safety. Food and shelter are important but you
should also do physical examinations of your dog. Look for any
signs of illness.
Your dog needs a physical examination by a vet once a year.
The vet examines the dog's anatomy and listens to its heart and
lungs. The vet will ask you questions about your dog. Your vet
will also give your dog preventative vaccinations against
canine diseases in your area and will also recommend other
products for protection against worms, fleas, and ticks.
One of the most important health aspects of your dog's
care is brushing their teeth. Just as the human diet can affect
our mouths, so can the diet of your dog affect their teeth.
Food particles can build up bacteria in the mouth
resulting in foul breath. There are toothbrushes and toothpaste
especially for dogs. Do not use human toothpaste. Dogs do not
like the foaming effect.
Safety in the home is important, too. If your dog goes
outside, you should ensure that your fence is far enough in the
ground so that your dog can not dig their way out of the yard.
Safety gates around your swimming pool are important for both
your dog and small children. Garden sheds and garages in which
tools and poisonous substances are stored should be kept locked.
Dogs like to chew on objects. Secure electrical cords. You
also need to determine if your house plants or flowers or
toxic to dogs. Secure cupboards that can be opened by your dog,
especially if you store household cleaners in them.
It is important to keep your dog's safety in mind when you
take it out for exercise. Puppies are easy to train and if you
adopted an adult dog, hopefully, it will have had some
obedience training. The basic training a puppy or dog needs is
to come, sit, stay, and lie down. These are easy commands to
learn. If your dog has not been trained, look for classes in
your area.
Your dog should be trained to walk with a lead. If you take
the lead off, watch the dog carefully. If you think you are
going to encounter children where you walk your dog, especially
a large dog, you will want to train it to wear a muzzle. Remove
the muzzle only if there is no danger to the children.
Dogs are great companions. They give unconditional love in
return for your taking care of them and giving them
affection.
